Q&A with Don Gerard: Mayor advises students to connect with local community

In April of 2011, the city of Champaign elected a new mayor for the first time in 12 years. Don Gerard, a Democrat, unseated three-term mayor and Republican Jerry Schweighart by winning 51 percent of the vote. In addition to serving as mayor, Gerard also oversees the Facilities & Operations unit for Life Sciences at the University, comprising Molecular and Cellular Biology and Integrative Biology.
