Your Guide to Registration

Grab some simple, straightfoward classes to boost your confidence – and GPA

Easy classes freshman year can definitely be confidence boosters. Or they can be lost opportunities.
These classes are meant to boost your GPA and give you extra free time to relax or explore the campus.

How to beat the fears of large classes

To some, going from high school to college may seem like getting seized from that comfortable pond and thrown into a much bigger ocean. Large classes, which are characteristic of the freshman experience, can be daunting for someone who has never been in a situation where the instructor might not know his or her name.

Looking for a good deal on textbooks? You better book it

Purchasing textbooks does not have to be the same burden as it was years ago; but then again, they are relatively more expensive today. With the increased price, there are also three local bookstores and endless online services that compete for students’ business, each with advantages.
Here are some of your options for purchasing textbooks:

The dangers of losing your i-card

We all thought that those days of taking mortifying pictures for the school yearbook and our driver’s license had ended.  No more opportunities to permanently capture our bad hair days, our strange inclinations to wear black turtle necks or our oh-so-awkward braces phase.  Yet here you are on your orientation day, being asked to take [...]

How to enjoy campus during your freshman year

You’ve heard it before: by the time graduation rolls around you will feel like you just finished orientation. These next four years are going to fly by, and each year will get busier than the last. So don’t wait for senior year to create a college bucket list, use your free time during your first [...]

The importance of enjoying your classes – and going to them

Freshman year is about knowing what freedom means. I don’t mean in some abstract “Do we have free will?” kind of way, but in the sense that freedom is an action made without external pressure.
Again, let’s bypass all the big questions of “Can I kill turtle if no one will know?” and look at something [...]

Curious about campus? We've got you covered

If you're looking information about news, sports, entertainment and everything else Illini, The Daily Illini is your campus source. We've been around the University of Illinois since 1871 and are completely independent from the school, meaning we can tell you what Illinois is really like, no strings attached. The Daily Illini is a part of Illini Media, a campus media company that also houses 107.1-FM WPGU, Buzz - a weekly entertainment publication, the Illio yearbook and the website the217.com. As a completely student run organization we write the stories, take the photos, check the facts and make sure we're getting you the best information when and how you need it. We've been on campus for a few years, working going to class, exploring Champaign-Urbana and cheering on the Illini. You can trust us to bring you the most accurate, useful and entertaining information all year long.

The Daily Illini is more than just a newspaper. Here's all the ways you can get your DI:

  • You'll find The Daily Illini in many University buildings and distributed around campus Monday through Friday when you get here in the fall.
  • We keep our website DailyIllini.com up to date 24/7 when school is in session and even on breaks. The site is full of videos, audio slideshows, live chats of Illini sporting events, polls and other ways for students to interact with us and with each other.
  • Like our facebook page at www.facebook.com/DailyIllini for photos, events and news around campus.
  • Follow us on twitter @TheDailyIllini and @di_sports for quick updates, links to great stories and other updates.
  • Download our IlliniMobile app to your iPhone or iPod, where you can access not only The Daily Illini, but live music streamed from WPGU, photos from our publications and more.
If you're interested in joining us, we'd love to have your talents, teach you new skills and have you be a part of a great Illini tradition of news, fun and media at the University of Illinois.

Look for our booth at Quad Day and come to one of our Info Nights either Aug. 26 or Sept. 1 at the Illini Media Building. We're located at 512 E. Green St. in Champaign, across from Coldstone. You'll recognize us with the radio station and Illini Apple Center on the first floor. Can't wait to meet you all.
